Contains information about the anteater, as well as the author. The anteaters are the only family in the infraorder Vermilingua of the order Edentata. The word Edentata means without teeth, a description of all the animals within it; however this is hardly the truth, as the anteaters are the only truly toothless Edentates. Their family, Myrmecophagidae from the Greek murmex [myrmex], ant, and fagein [phagein], to eat, contains three genera: Myrmecophaga, which contains the single giant anteater species; Tamandua, which covers both the lesser anteaters although opinion varies as to whether these are far enough apart to merit separate species; and Cyclopes, under which is classified the sole species of pygmy anteater. You will note that these are the only true Myrmecophagids; animals such as the aardvark cape anteater, pangolin scaly anteater, numbat banded anteater, and echidna spiny anteater, all of which are commonly thought of as relatives of real anteaters, are not strictly so.
